Tips and strategies for improving your site (a total beginners guide)
I bet your pumped up and ready to take your site to the next level.
And we are so thrilled for you!
You're putting on your boxing gloves and you're ready to fight!
Alright, so the #1 question I get is, "how do I improve my SEO?"
Here are some tips that I recommend exploring (especially if you are just starting out).
Tip #1 The 300 Rule ✏️
Write longer product descriptions that include your keyword 1-2x (this helps Google understand more about your product) up to 300 words is great.
A lot of folks gloss over this but it's actually super important for SEO. 😅
Google is a blind robot that can't see your pretty product images so this is your chance to explain to them (in words) what your product is all about.
Also, all the words you write in your product description are searchable by Google, meaning you could rank for something!
Make sure not to use copy and paste methods (if you are doing drop shipping).
If you have repetitive content (like shipping /sizing info) that's okay but just make sure the actual product description is 300 words on its own.
It's totally OK to go over 300 words, the more the better!
✅ PRO TIP: Make sure to also include your keyword 1-2x in your product description.

Tip #2 Add a video of your product 📹
Add a product video if you can (even amateur product videos made on your phone are totally okay and help the customer have more confidence in your products).
Why is this important? Videos are known as "rich content" which Google loves and tends to ranks higher.
It shows that you put in a little extra effort to create more content for your product page that is above and beyond what most of your competitors are doing.
Also, videos keep your customers on the page longer (while they are viewing it!) which increases how long they stay on your product page, which can, in turn, help them stick around to buy something.
Videos are also a great way to do a sales pitch on why the product is so awesome, why they should buy it, and hopefully also answers any questions they might have about its appearance or functionality.
✅ PRO TIP: Name your video file with the keyword you are trying to target.
Example: black_rhinestone_necklace_gold.mov
Tip #3: Start Blogging! 👨🏻💻
Get active on your blog! If you don't already have a blog on your Shopify store, I recommend creating one.
If you already have a blog, try writing one article per week. If you do 1 article a week that's already 52 articles in one year!
Head on over to a top-ranking domain in your industry and you'll notice they all have active blogs. Your competitors are crushing it on their blogs.
Top ranking websites usually write about 10,000 words per month on their blogs.
Why? Blog articles are a great way to generate traffic. How? By ranking for keywords.
You can target keywords in your blog article titles just like you can on your product titles, this is a great way to

Tip #4: Earn Backlinks!
Backlinks are when another website links back to your website.
The idea is to earn backlinks legitimately.
Never buy backlinks.
There are no exceptions to this rule. Buying backlinks is "Black Hat SEO" and can get you in a lot of trouble with Google like being blacklisted, and an extreme drop in rank.
We're talking permanent damage that is nearly impossible to recover from.
Try to earn “do follow” backlinks, as these are the ones that count for SEO.
“No follow” backlinks can be helpful for marketing purposes and can indirectly help SEO, but of course “do follow” are much better to get.

Tip #5: Use Descriptive Language for your Product Titles
Make sure your product title is very descriptive.
Try to stay away from one word abstract, artsy, poetic product names like "ALOHA" or "PINEAPPLE."
Be specific.
Tell me more about the product in your product title.
What color is it? What style is it?
If I was blindfolded and couldn't see your product image, and you read the name of your product title to me, would I know exactly what it looked like?
Would I know exactly what you're selling?
if the answer is no, chances are your product title is way too broad or lacks descriptive language.
How will Google know what you are selling? Chances are they won't and your product won't be shown on search results.
If you're selling a painting, does your product title have the word "painting" in it somewhere? If you're selling Vaping Juice doe your product title contain the words "vaping juice"?
Don't assume search engines will get it or understand from your images because remember they are blind robots.
PRO TIP: Try using keywords in your product titles. Keywords are phrases or terms that people search for on Google when they want to buy something. Check out our guide on crafting the perfect product title with keywords.
